Ric Clark is founder of Bursnide Investments, a private investment company, and cofounder of WatermanClark, a real estate investment partnership formed to redevelop and manage Lever House, NYC. From 1984 until 2021, Mr. Clark had been with Brookfield Corporation and its predecessors in various senior roles, including Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Brookfield Property Group, Brookfield Property Partners and Brookfield Office Properties. Under his leadership, the property group grew its assets under management from $5 billion to more than $200 billion, expanded its investment, operational and asset management capabilities beyond the office sector into the multifamily, industrial, hotel and retail sectors, and extended its geographic footprint beyond North America and Brazil to Europe, Australia, India and China. Today, Brookfield is one of the largest owners and operators of real estate with more than 600 million square feet of properties in key markets worldwide.
As Chief Executive Officer of Brookfield Office Properties from 2002 to 2012, Mr. Clark spearheaded the repositioning of the company into a global business with the acquisition of the Trizec Office portfolio in the U.S. in 2006, an 18 Class A office property portfolio in Australia in 2010, and the Hammerson office portfolio in London in 2012. Today, Brookfield is the largest commercial property owner in New York, London, Toronto, Houston, Calgary, and Perth, and is one of the top owners in Sydney, Melbourne, Seoul and Berlin.
Mr. Clark also led Brookfield in building a major Multifamily business comprising a $17 billion portfolios covering 67,000 units in 225 properties in 2021 when he left the Company. During his tenure, Brookfield made a series of major strategic acquisitions, including the recapitalization of General Growth Properties, the U.S.’ #2 mall company, and the privatization of Forest City Realty Trust, a $12 billion portfolio of high-quality office, multifamily, retail and development assets across the U.S.
In 2000, Mr. Clark started Brookfield’s Development business with 300 Madison Avenue as its first project. Today, Brookfield is highly regarded as one of the world’s most forward thinking and active place-makers with $10+ billion of projects underway globally (as of 2021), including the 7 million square-foot Manhattan West projects in New York City and other major projects in London, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Melbourne, Perth and Dubai.
Mr. Clark is the Chairman of the Alliance for Downtown New York and the Downtown Lower Manhattan Association. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, The Ronald O.Perelman Performing Arts Center at the World Trade Center and the Feinstein Institute of Medical Research. He also serves on the Board of Managers of Vivion Investments S.à r.l., a European investor and operator of hotel and other commercial properties, and on the Board of Directors at Macy’s. Mr. Clark was previously on the Board of Directors of General Growth Properties, Rouse Properties (Chairman), Brookfield Property Partners (Chairman), and Brookfield Office Properties. Mr. Clark holds a Bachelor of Science in Business from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
